Here is a review of the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters conference call on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, with:

-- CHAIRMAN: Joe Terrell, KLTV, Tyler
-- TV PRESIDENT: Jenny Martinez, KRGV, Weslaco
-- TV VICE PRESIDENT: Mike George, KBTX, Bryan
-- RADIO PRESIDENT: Chace Murphy, WTAW, Bryan-College Station
-- RADIO VICE PRESIDENT: Matt Thomas, KRLD, Dallas
-- and Dallas AP's Barry Bedlan & Diana Heidgerd

1. TAPB Balance:
-- Total received from TAPB contest so far: $34,095. Pending: $1,225. Total from contest entry fees will be: $35,320.

2. BILLS to be paid.
Board members approved payment of following bills:
-- March $50 payment to webmaster Noble Sprayberry
-- Global Crossing $41 payment, for January's TAPB conference call
-- AP's Diana Heidgerd: $1,150 (for 23 gift cards at $50 each for TAPB judges). That's for $50 for each of the 22 judges, plus an extra $50 for one judge who judged twice as many as he was assigned, due to a computer glitch.

-- This was the first year that the contest was completely online (no more flying judges to Dallas). A total of 22 journalism professionals currently working in radio & TV markets outside Texas judged the entries.
-- Contest judging was completed Thursday morning, Feb. 23. Barry & Diana will work on processing the results, with a goal of getting the lists of radio &TV winners on the wire by Wednesday, Feb. 29. The lists of winners could be announced as early as Friday, Feb. 24.
-- Final 2012 numbers: 788 total entries, from 12 radio & 36 TV stations (Compares to 782 entries in 2011, that's 12 radio/36 TV stations)
-- 2012 radio entries: 148 (compared to 154 in 2011)
-- 2012 TV entries: 640 (compared to 628 in 2011).
-- Entry money in 2012: Final total will be $35,320 (compared to about $33,640 in 2011).

-- Deadline to enter was Friday, Feb. 17. Last year six students shared $7,500 in TAPB scholarships.
Board members on March 3 will meet at The Associated Press offices in Dallas to pick scholarship winners and decide how much money to award.

5. TAPB/Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas:
-- Deadline to enter was Friday, Feb. 17. Board members meeting March 3 at AP in Dallas will pick the sole winner.

-- Board set $45 per person for the convention registration cost (since judges are no longer flown to Dallas to judge radio/TV/online entries, several thousand dollars saved). Banquet prices are also more reasonable at the Headliners Club in Austin, site of the March 31, 2012, TAPB awards banquet, compared to outside hotels. Last year the banquet registration cost was $75 per person. Diana will move advisories on the wire & post at:
-- Board chose TAPB banquet meal as almond-crusted chicken, at $25.95 per person. Dessert will be Texas pecan ball with hot fudge, at $6.95 per person (both are costs before tax & gratuities). Board also rounded up, to the next dollar, the cost of bar drinks.
-- Door prizes? Board approved spending $300 on gift cards this year. Last year spent $250 for gift cards.
-- Diana will line up photographer, same cost as last year: $300. Diana will also line up attendant to handle bar tickets, pay the person $75.
-- Board approve spending $500 cash in "kitty" money for registration table & for the person doing bar/beverage tickets (make change).
-- Board member Benji Snead and staff of KCBD-TV will again do "Best of Show" for the March 31 TAPB banquet. Board approved spending $300, same as last year. Benji will be provided with links to the contest website,, to pick best of show.
NOTE: This year the "Best Newscast" winners for all four TV divisions and the two radio divisions will NOT be announced until the banquet night. A list of "FINALISTS" for "Best Newscast" will be announced prior to the March 31 TAPB convention. The "Best of Show" feature will include more video/audio/details on all of the finalists.
Board will also spend more money on "Best Newscast" plaques, compared to the regular plaques. AP's Diana Heidgerd will check with Trophies Inc., which does the TAPB plaques, and report to board on March 3.

-- Last year TAPB donated $1,000. Board on March 3, during meeting at AP in Dallas, will consider how much to donate this year.

7. BOARD MEETING IN DALLAS: Saturday, March 3.
-- Board will convene at 1:30 p.m.

-- Anyone interested in running for the TAPB board of directors should go to the group's website: and contact any board member. Board members will be elected during the TAPB business session the afternoon of Saturday, March 31, at the Headliners Club in Austin.

9. Other business?

Next board meeting in person on Saturday afternoon, March 3, at AP offices in Dallas.
